Congratulations Esther and Phillip — Sochi, Russia Winter Olympics

Birkebeiner has another two representatives at a Winter Olympic Games. Yesterday Esther Bottomley and Philip Bellingham were named to the Winter Olympic Team to compete in Sochi, Russia 7-23 February 2014.

This will be Phillip’s first Olympics, and Esther’s third, having competed in 2006 at Torino, Italy and in 2010 at Vancouver, Canada.

Congratulations to Finn Marsland, club member and High Performance Manager and Coach who will be coaching at Sochi. This will be Finn’s third Winter Olympics having also coached at Torino and Vancouver.

The club is very proud of their achievement and we wish them every success in Sochi. They join the following club members who have represented Australia at past Olympics:

  • Chris Heberle (1988 Calgary, Canada)
  • Paul Gray (1992 Albertville, France, and 1998 Nagano, Japan)
  • Mark Gray (1994 Lillehammer, Norway)
  • Paul Murray (2006 Torino and 2010 Vancouver)

End of Season BBQ

On Saturday 23rd November, Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club is holding its annual end-of-season BBQ in the picnic area by the lake in Mount Beauty from 5.30 p.m. This early start will allow the Community Band members and audience to get away in time for their concert.

I do hope you and your family can come.

We will provide the meat (and vegie burgers for those who prefer them), as well as bread and sauce.

You’ll need to bring your own chair, cutlery, plates, drinks, plus, for families, a salad and a sweet to share (singles and couples – please bring a salad OR a sweet to share).

As a courtesy to Kerry, please let her know you will be coming and if you need vegetarian food (or else BYO meat!!) If you don’t reply, we will assume you are not coming so we don’t over-order. It also makes it easier to contact you if the weather necessitates a change of venue.

RSVP this Wednesday 20th November to Social Secretary Kerry Lucas, email <km.lucas@bigpond.com>, SMS 0407 814 114, or phone (03) 5754 1341.

For those of you who don’t live locally, there is much to enjoy about Mt Beauty and Falls Creek at this time of year…

▪    Swimming in Mt Beauty’s solar heated pool or in the river.

▪    Fishing and canoeing in the pondage, the Kiewa River or up at Rocky Valley Dam

▪    Cycling on or off-road, mountain bike trails, High Plains aqueducts, BMX track.
